The increasing mobility of the information society places new demands on the planning and provision of media and information services on a worldwide basis. This requires interdisciplinary cooperation of national and international companies from the segments of broadcasting and telecommunications as well as research institutions.
 
The European Mobile Media Project MI FRIENDS has been established and planned by the Bayerische Landeszentrale für Neue Medien (BLM) as a pilot project on the basis of article 30 of the Bavarian Law of Media (BayMG). The target of the project which has been scheduled until mid 2008 is the development of new mobile broadcasting offers and services with the implementation of new media technologies. This will be realized within the framework of a European and international cluster for innovation in the field of mobile media. This project focuses on human beings as mobile media consumers in local-regional areas.
 
The overall project consists of four European subprojects concentrating on different subjects. The test regions have been chosen bearing in mind that the research results can be applied in almost all regions of Europe. The target is the development of successful strategies for local-regional supply models with mobile media facing increased global competition. This explicitly should be reached in a combine with classic media companies as well as new medium-sized content providers and technology companies.
